Eastern Community Church was born out of a small group of determined parishioners on June 13, 1976. Sunday worship service was led by a layperson except for the first Sunday of each month, which was led by an ordained minister who consecrated the communion. In February 1977, the congregation took a giant step in selecting its first Pastor, Reverend Braxton J. Boyd, Sr. In 1989, Eastern Community Church purchased its first home at 38th and Rhode Island Avenue in Mt. Rainer, Maryland and held its first worship service on the first Sunday in September of that year.
In 2001, a new chapter in the history of Eastern Community Church began with the selection of a “visionary,” Damion M. Briggs, to become its seventh pastor. With an increasingly growing membership, the ability to adequately service its members became a concern for Pastor Briggs. This encouraged him to search for a new church building for Eastern. In October 2001, God’s grace and abundant blessings moved the congregation from 38th and Rhode Island Avenue in Mt. Rainer, Maryland to its current location at 8213 Manson Street in Landover, Maryland.
Under the leadership of Pastor Briggs, Eastern Community Church has experienced progress and spiritual growth in every aspect. Accepting his new charge from God with a congregation of seven members, membership at Eastern Community Church has experienced tremendous growth and continues to draw people of all ages, saving souls and introducing them to God’s amazing love.
The desire for Eastern Community Church to grow as a church can be seen in the numerous ministries and outreach programs that have been established under Pastor Briggs’ leadership. They include: Audio/Video, Christian Education, , Expressions, Gospel Choir, Dance, Deacon, Deaconess, Enrichment/Tutoring/Scholarship, Evangelism/Outreach, Greeters, Health, Mind, Body, and Wellness, Hospitality, House Care, Instrumental Music, Media/Library, Men’s Choir, Men’s Ministry, New Members, Pastoral Care, Singles, Sunday School, Transportation, Tribes of Eastern, Trustee, Usher, Youth, Transportation, Marriage, Healing and Deliverance, and the Women’s Ministry.
Eastern Community Church has a warm welcome for all who enters through its doors. It is a family of believers who are committed to spreading "The TRUTH of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” through teaching, preaching, and being a light for those who have lost hope. The lyrics to the church song, “We Come This Far By Faith,” is a true testimony to the history of Eastern Community Church and its members.
Eastern Community Church was previously led by Reverend Braxton Boyd (deceased), Reverend James Williamson (deceased), Reverend Albert Simms, Reverend Roy Neal (deceased), and Reverend Carlton A. Powell (resigned/relocated).
